Tim Wort, Parent U7 player
“Initially like many parents with a strong background in competitive sport I had significant reservations about the program that the club have introduced at U7. Having taken the time to read the policy properly and reflect on it, and having seen the new program first hand, my view has changed.
Each of the new elements of the program appear to be working well; the technical skills coaching by Coerver Coaching, the park 'pitch up and play' sessions, the inter club tournaments and the selective semi-competitive games against other clubs.
The children clearly benefit. They're getting a great opportunity to build a base of sound skill and technique. Many parents have commented on the quality of the football, and have been surprised at the skill levels. Each week we've seen some great football and the children are really enjoying it. They're getting the chance to try out new skills in a relaxed and fun environment, and they get the chance to do so with gentle support and encouragement from the sidelines. The lack of parental pressure has clearly helped the children.
Although its early days, and the program will need to evolve, my initial observations of the program are positive, and we've been happy to fully support the initiative the club are taking. Even if as they play more competitive games they get beaten from time to time, if they enjoy their football and learn to play with better developed skills and techniques, then the initiative will have been worthwhile."
Les Howie, National Football Development Manager – The FA
"The work you identified in your development plan sounded really exciting and will provide the club and your members with a clear direction to build on your already existing solid foundation.
I was particularly impressed with your work in player development and looking to create positive learning environments for young members by providing intra club activities.”
Gwynne Berry – Director UK & Spain, Coerver Coaching
“Coerver Coaching are pleased to be able to support and endorse the Kew Park Rangers player development program, especially the focus on a technique based programs for young children in a relaxed, fun and friendly environment. We look forward to continuing our association with Kew Park Rangers to assist and enhance this program over the coming years. “
Gary Mulcahey Community Development Manager and Academy Coach
“Fulham Football Club Community Sports Trust has had a superb partnership with Kew Park Rangers FC for over 10 years. We at Fulham Football Club respect the good work that the volunteers are doing week in week out down at Kew Park Rangers. This new development with the younger age groups is another example of the good practise that Kew Park Rangers continues to aspire to.
This is a key age for learning and the managers and people involved at KPR recognise this and have worked closely with us in developing a positive learning environment for children to learn the game of football. We need to make sure these children enjoy their first experience of football at grass roots level in order that they stay within the football family for decades to come.
Well done to KPR on this new development within their Club.”
Paul Cooper – Give us Back our Game co-founder
"Give Us Back Our Game fully supports the player development programme. We feel that U7s and U8s should be playing smaller sided games in-house along with friendlies against like minded clubs. It is a bold step for Kew Park Rangers to take and we would like to see this as the blue print for all clubs across the country.”
Kew Park Rangers Football Club have reviewed guidelines from The FA, The Surrey FA and Fulham FC and had discussions with outside groups like Coerver and the Beckham Academy to ensure that we are in line with best practice advised by these organisations for age groups up and including U8.
This review has resulted in the club developing the ethos/policy on coaching outlined below:
- Fun & development before winning
- The game is the best teacher
- Plenty of free play
- No coaching or shouting from the sidelines
- Let children find their own solutions
- Encourage expression & creativity
- Play in different positions
- Freedom to fail
- Focus on individual player development
This program will be started with our U6 squad during season 06/07 who will then carry it through to the end of their U8 season. Younger squads will then follow the program as they progress. Program guidelines as follows:
Saturday training – focused on key individual development
All players will take part in the same session split into manageable numbers with a similar format to the current sessions. Training sessions will be planned and managed by Coerver Coaches provided by the club and run with the assistance of volunteer coaches/helpers. The Coerver coaches will work closely with the volunteer coaches/helpers to ensure continued development in line with player progression. Sessions will concentrate on the keys aspects on football development, passing, shooting, dribbling, turning, heading (as players develop) and 1v1 games.
Sunday matches – focused on fun
The club have secured the set up and use of a special 40x30 yard pitch with smaller than current 7-a-side goals at the University of Westminster sports ground in Chiswick to allow 5-a-side football to be player.
Age groups will be issued with KPR badged kits of different colours to allow 5-a-side matches to be player and ensure the players feel part of the club.
U6 – those available to take part in Sunday sessions will be split into teams of 5/6 players. Teams will then play each other in short 5-a-side games once or twice each month as the coaches see fit. Teams will be mixed and changed regularly to encourage players of all abilities to mix and to de-emphasise the importance of winning.
U7 – as above but Sunday sessions will be more regularly arranged, possible 3 to 4 times each month.
U8 – first half of season will be as per U7 schedule, with the option to arrange friendly games against teams in the local area who have a similar policy. Second have of the season will see the U8 age group start to play 7-a-side football in the same format. Friendly games against Surrey Youth League teams can be arranged to introduce the players to that level of football and help gauge the league level they should be entered at for the U9 season.
U9 – teams will be entered into Surrey Youth League, or Surrey County Girls League as the coaches see fit
Some advantages of this are:
1. Players learn in a fun, friendly environment free from the pressure of having to win
2. Players feel empowered to try skills and tricks they may have seen others do without fear of criticism
3. Players develop key individual skills and abilities that are the building blocks for team football
4. Coaches can focus on player development without worrying about results and league tables
5. Parents can get used to Sunday football without having to travel the sometimes long distances involved within the league
Guidelines for coaches and parents
It is key that for this program to work the support of all coaches and especially parents involved is given. The club will work to ensure that the program works, whilst being open to suggestions and feedback on possible improvements. Those not committed to the program will of course be given the opportunity to air their views but ultimately will be encouraged to find alternative arrangements with clubs who may have a different approach. The following is a minimum expectation of all parents and coaches from the club:
- Commitment to training and match arrangements shown by regular attendance
- Support and encouragement of all players, regardless of ability
- No shouting from sidelines
- Respect and appreciation for time spent by coaches
- Positive attitude to players away from training and match days
